Trentino dialects

Trentino dialects are several and different. The local idioms have been influenced by the neighbouring cultures, outside the region. They are also in constant mutation: the past simple, for instance, has gone out of daily use a couple of centuries ago. For many reasons, the mixture between italian and Trentino dialect has become more and more common: words such as “salt” and “sleep”, which are feminine in the local dialect, almost lose their originary gendre in the mouth of the young people trying to adjust them to Italian.

A project of the university of Trento, financed by the Province, has envisaged to accomplish a lexical register of Trentino dialects: a database of local Trentino idioms, useful to maintain their phonetics.

Not much to say about our mountain people and their rudeness. According to the folklorist Angelico Prati, the difficulty in communicating (which does not mean lack of feelings) and the awkward and sharp way of talking are deep in the nature of the natives.

Here is a list of some of the most important local museums: Museum of Uses and Customs of the Trentino People (S. Michele all'Adige) - Buonconsiglio Castle (Trento) - Mart (The Modern and Contemporary Art Museum of Trento and Rovereto) - Fortunato Depero Museum (Rovereto) - Gianni Caproni Aeronautics Museum (Trento) - Tridentine Museum of Natural Science with theme exhibitions (Trento) - Ladin Museum (Vigo di Fassa) - Italian Museum of War History (Rovereto). The historical town centres are also very charming and suggestive, and induce you to take a walk, do some shopping and have a look around. Many events are performed both in summer and winter: a rich calendar of theatre and music shows, historical recallings, sport competitions, festivals and folklore traditions. Some of the most significant are “Vinum Bonum” and “the Sounds of the Dolomites”.
