Business school heads vow to fight axing of MBA apprenticeship

The heads of leading British company faculties have vowed to thwart authorities designs to axe the MBA apprenticeship by splitting the research into two, with the vast majority however getting lined by the coaching programme.

Apprenticeships for senior executives have mushroomed adhering to authorities reforms to capabilities funding that compelled businesses with annual payrolls increased than £3m to established apart an equivalent to .five per cent of this sum for investing on office coaching strategies.

Unhappiness that levy funds were being getting expended in this way, on programmes costing up to £18,000, prompted education secretary Gavin Williamson to request a assessment into the MBA apprenticeship with an eye to taking away it from the levy program.

The Department for Training has not however formally scrapped the MBA apprenticeship. But in the most up-to-date checklist of apprenticeship benchmarks issued by the administering agency, the prerequisite to receive an MBA or other masters degree to finish a senior chief qualification has been lower.

Having said that, David Oglethorpe, dean of Cranfield university’s university of administration, informed the Fiscal Instances that his institution would continue to present an MBA whatsoever the final result of the assessment.

Below Mr Oglethorpe’s proposal, students would finish a senior chief apprenticeship and then undertake an more piece of coursework and spend an more price to receive an MBA. Some students may well have to spend this cost, which could be up to £9,000, by themselves but it would however only be a fraction of the whole price.

“I have been battling tooth and nail to say go away it as it is, but this indicates we could however present the qualification,” Mr Oglethorpe explained.

“The suggestions we get from businesses is that it will help them bring in and keep critical workers. A fifth of our consumption come from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds and 15 per cent had hardly ever been to college just before starting up the programme.”

“The senior chief apprenticeship standard has been mapped on to an MBA curriculum, building it easy for us to present an MBA for individuals that would like a single,” Mr Oglethorpe explained. “We would have to demarcate the two qualifications but that is relatively basic to do.”

This way of funding an MBA has strengths, Mr Oglethorpe added. “Whilst the qualification stays part of an apprenticeship standard, you cannot ask staff to contribute to the value. If you could, it would signify they would have pores and skin in the match.”

Other company university heads explained they were being thinking of equivalent preparations if the authorities decided to clear away the MBA from apprenticeships.

“The MBA is viewed as a considerable issue on a CV so there will constantly be an incentive to present a route to acquiring this by means of the apprenticeship,” John Board, dean of Henley Business enterprise University.

“The even larger threat is that the authorities cuts the selling price businesses ought to spend for the apprenticeship, which would no extended make it viable for faculties like us to present our training course. You would then be left with companies who only spend lip provider to the benchmarks essential for large-top quality administration coaching.”

The thought of providing an MBA separately to the apprenticeship also been given the backing of the Chartered Management Institute, the accreditation human body for administration education in the Uk.

“It would established a peculiar precedent if the authorities explained that businesses cannot spend for their staff to research for this qualification if that is what they want to do,” Daisy Hooper, the CMI’s head of plan and general public affairs, explained.

“The apprenticeship levy has broadened access to the MBA. Limiting this will move it back to turning out to be an elitist qualification.”

The Department for Training explained: “The education secretary requested the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Training to assessment the senior chief apprenticeships standard to ensure it is conference its aims and gives worth for dollars. The assessment is ongoing.”
